Ontario is Investing in London's Bus Rapid Transit System

Today, we have a 170 million reasons to be happy!

Ontario is investing $170 million to build our new Bus Rapid Transit System. Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca and MPP for London North Centre Deb Matthews were in London yesterday to announce that the province is funding the largest transit project in our city.

This funding brings us one step closer to making it easier for ALL Londoners to move around. London's Bus Rapid Transit is a major transit project that will connect people in our city with work, school, appointments, and activities faster, while increasing transit ridership and helping manage congestion.

Building our London for tomorrow includes creating connections that move more people, more efficiently. It means transforming what we have today and growing it for the future.  It means not adding to congestion or letting our outdated transportation system continue to stagnate. It means providing the sustainable, safe, accessible, and reliable transportation that gives every Londoner a choice. The choice to arrive sooner. The choice to stay longer. The choice to use public transit one day and a personal vehicle the next.

Transitioning to Bus Rapid Transit will connect our entire city, and give Londoners exciting, modern transportation options. This project is key to improving our transportation system as a whole, and building our neighbourhoods and our community for the future.

Next steps - We've gotten to this point over many years of consultation with the community, and we will continue to consult with Londoners as we move forward. Before shovels hit the ground, we are still studying how to best deliver Rapid Transit for London so it has the most positive impact.

Now that we have this funding commitment, we will be able to start delivering on some early elements of Rapid Transit - like intelligent traffic signals, improvements to local intersections and maybe even a prototype stop - within the year.

This money should not be given to the BRT project without a proper vote by Londoner’s. Put a question on the municipal election ballot and let’s see who thinks this is good use of public funds.
